CLIMATE EDUCATION
Helping schools to build effective and affordable oceanographic and atmospheric simulation apparatus and curriculum.
Our Purpose
The movement of air and water in the atmosphere and ocean play a critical role in regulating the Earth’s climate in a variety of ways, from transporting heat towards the poles, to sequestering carbon dioxide from the atmosphere in the deep sea. Having a basic understanding of how the ocean and atmospheric circulations work is thus essential for grasping key concepts in the science of climate change. In particular, these circulations are strongly influenced by the effects of the Earth’s rotation. Our purpose is to:
Build
We send schools the designs for a precise rotating table that mimics the effects of climate change that costs only $160 to build. Join our community to get access to the designs, advice on updates and modifications, and any additional assistance you may need from our team.
Simulate
Simulate flow phenomena in the ocean and atmosphere (such as the Hadley circulation, storms, and ocean gyres) using the table. The experiments can be visually stunning, like pieces of fluid artwork, and thus can be appreciated on several levels, from their basic science to their aesthetic appeal.
Educate
Step-by-step instructions to build the table and perform the experiments will be made available so that they can be easily incorporated into lesson plans on climate science. The experiments can be an effective teaching tool and aim to spark a fascination for the ocean-atmosphere-climate system and how it works.
